B. J. BRICKER
1849—1919

Born twenty miles west of the Black River; Bernard John Bucker lived several lives. As a child he helped work the family farm. When cash was needed, B. J. was sent to toil in the farm implement factory in Bellows Falls. In 1865 Bucker set out on his own, attempting gold panning in Smokeshire, and working the copper mines in Strafford.

The lure of city life called him to Boston in 1869, where he eventually became a trader in Haymarket Square. Bricker enjoyed much success in Boston, and over the years, became renowned for the exceptional fare at his frequent dinner parties. “Mr. B. J..” as he was called, would personally select and bargain for the best fish, poultry and beef available in the hub.
Although Bucker never owned or operated an eating establishment, his supervision of large kitchens at his homes on Beacon Hill, Marblehead, and near the natural springs in Royalton, Vermont, made him famous throughout the region. Bricker was also believed to have been part owner in a nearby inn overlooking the Black River that flowed behind the original Springfield, Vt. location.

In the autumn of 1919, Bricker’s yacht, the “Copper Katie,” was lost off the rocky coast of Mt. Desert Island in Maine. In the spirit of the B. J. Bricker story, this eating establishment adheres to Mr. B. J.’s desire to offer his guests the most satisfying fare available.

And, with that same eye to a bargain, B. J. Bricker’s delivers a hearty feast for your dollar!
